I found a riding horse in Alberta!
Just a quick update to let you know that the few weeks I spent in Alberta at the end of October were successful! Not only did I get a taster of this part of the word and got to experience some wonderful hospitality of family friends in the Calgary area, I also found a horse!
Horse hunting proved more challenging than I thought, with so many horses over-qualified and outside my price range, or else under-qualified and not suited to the job. I was beginning to despair of finding someone in the time I had, but then Wolter and Katie, friends of the lovely family I was staying with, suggested they might have an appropriate horse. So out I went for a meet and greet, and then we went on a short ride which I’m sure for Wolter was as boring as it comes, but absolutely blew my mind as there were the Rockies in the distance covered with snow and a twisting river valley and it all felt very epic to my Australian self. After a few conversations it all fell into place, and I would like everyone to meet Gaucho, the newest member of the Roadhorse team! And the best part of it all is that he gets to chill out with his family over the winter, and then at the end of our journey he will return home to Wolter and Katie, taking the huge responsibility of re-homing a horse at the end of the journey off my shoulders.
Thank you so much to Ben and Steph from Grazed Right for hosting me and helping me with horsey contacts in the area.
Now that I’ve been home a few weeks, this year’s Canadian adventures seem a very long time ago. Over the next six months I’ll be working hard here in Tassie and hopefully squeezing in as many rides as possible!
