He carried me 4,500 km across Canada. Now it's my turn to carry him home.

In 2024, I met a horse called Wilson in New Brunswick.

He had come from a rescue situation, was malnourished, and had accumulated more than his fair share of difficult habits. Some of his quirks were funny. Some were frustrating. And some were genuinely dangerous.

He wasn't the sort of horse that everyone would have chosen.

But he became mine, and that year, Wilson travelled across the Eastern Provinces with me, carrying all our gear.

Then, in 2026, we started off again. Across the Canadian Prairies. Through the Rocky Mountains.Through thousands of kilometres of country. All the while carrying my camping gear, food and equipment on his back.

In total, Wilson has carried my gear approximately 4,500 km.

He has worked hard for me. He has endured a lot. And despite all his quirks, he has become one of the most important characters in this entire adventure.

Now I want to bring him home.

Just to retire. No more massive journeys. Just friends, forage, freedom, and some hooning around the bush. I have a home waiting for him in Tasmania, where he can spend the rest of his days with plenty of grass, good care, and his old travelling companion and good friend, Jack.

Some people will understandably ask: "Why not rehome him in Canada?"

The truth is that finding the right home for a horse like Wilson isn't as simple as finding someone who wants a horse. An easy, personable horse can often be rehomed with reasonable confidence that they will be loved and looked after.

Wilson is different.

I know his difficult sides. I know his quirks. I know the situations he struggles with. And I know what he needs to be happy and safe.

Most importantly, I know I can give him an excellent home for the rest of his life.

After everything we've done together, I believe bringing him home is the best way I can fulfil my responsibility to him as his owner.

The problem is that getting a horse from Canada to Tasmania is extraordinarily expensive.

Air transport, quarantine, veterinary requirements, ground transport and the ferry to Tasmania all add up.

My fundraising target is $80,000 AUD.

That's a huge number. I know that. But I'm not asking one person to pay $80,000.

I'm asking a community to help carry it.

If 1,000 people contributed $80, we'd get there.

If 2,000 people contributed $40, we'd get there.

If 4,000 people contributed $20, we'd get there.

And if you can't donate, sharing this campaign could be just as valuable. Between Facebook and Instagram, more than 45,000 of you have followed parts of this journey.

You have watched Wilson cross provinces, climb mountains, carry our gear, get himself into trouble, and generally be… Wilson. Now I need your help to help write the final chapter.

This money will be used to cover the costs associated with bringing Wilson from Canada to his retirement home in Tasmania, including transport, quarantine, veterinary requirements, ground transport and associated expenses. I'll share updates on the fundraising progress and, as costs become confirmed, provide transparency around the major expenses involved.

If the final cost of Wilson's journey is lower than the amount raised, remaining funds will be retained for Wilson's ongoing care, transport and retirement in Tasmania.

And if we don't raise enough to bring him home, I will still make sure Wilson is safe and well cared for. I will do my due diligence to find him the best possible retirement home in Canada.

But I'm going to give bringing him home everything I've got.
